One line next to the “C” (Control) region is a negative result; one line next to the “C” and a second line next to the “T” (Test) region denotes a positive result. With a negative result, you are considered screended for colon cancer and your next step is to test again in one year, while a positive result should be followed up with a colonoscopy. The main advantage of Second Generation FIT® is that an individual performs the whole test at home and does not need to send a sample in the mail. A 2019 meta-analysis notes that FIT has a high overall diagnostic accuracy for colorectal cancer and is a viable screening method. This conclusion is consistent with that of a 2017 peer reviewed article which adds that although FIT is 95% accurate in detecting colorectal cancer, it has a low sensitivity for detecting colon polyps.
As a Gastroenterologist, I love to see so many people taking control of their health using the Second Generation FIT® home test kit. Many of my patients who were apprehensive of colonoscopy found this test to be an easy, inexpensive, and accurate alternative once per year. Those who were positive were able to act early and prevent colon cancer. This test saves lives.
